Guide to the Nachlaot Neighborhood in Jerusalem
What is Nachlaot?
Nachlaot is a group of historic Jerusalem neighborhoods (19 neighborhoods in total) built at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. A maze of alleys, attached houses, shared courtyards — one of the unique urban fabrics in Israel.
Location
5 minutes from Mahane Yehuda, 10 minutes from the Knesset, 2 minutes from the light rail (Shuk station). A very central location.
Atmosphere
"Jerusalem Bohemia" — artists, musicians, writers, interesting characters. In the shared courtyards, friendships still form like in old neighborhoods. A feeling that cannot be bought in a store.
Mahane Yehuda Market
The beating heart of Nachlaot. 5 minutes walk. Shopping, food, culture, entertainment — it’s all there.
Disadvantages
- Parking — almost impossible
- Old buildings — maintenance costs
- Relatively small properties
- Noise from the nearby Mahane Yehuda
