Integration in Ma'agan Kibbutz — 7 Steps to Membership

Ma'agan Kibbutz is a community kibbutz that accepts new families through an organized process. The integration process lasts 4-8 months and aims to ensure a mutual fit: you want to be part of the community, and the community wants to accept you. Here are the 7 steps in detail.
Step 1: Initial Meeting with the Integration Coordinator
Goal: Initial acquaintance, explanation about the kibbutz and the integration process, clarification of mutual expectations.
Duration: 1-2 hours. Location: at the kibbutz offices or at the coordinator's home.
What to Prepare: General information about the family, employment background, reasons for wanting to join, questions.
Step 2: Filling Out the Integration Questionnaire
Goal: Official registration of your details - personal, educational, employment details, family background, economic status, expectations from the kibbutz.
Duration: 1-2 weeks for preparation. Depth: Detailed questionnaire of 10-15 pages.
Step 3: Integration Committee - Personal Interview
Goal: In-depth acquaintance with the candidates.
Participants: 3-5 kibbutz members, including the head of the integration committee, the integration coordinator, and community representatives.
Duration: 2-3 hours.
Content: Questions about values, vision, ability to integrate, contribution to the community.
Step 4: Hosting Weekend
Goal: To truly feel the kibbutz - not just read about it.
Content: A full weekend at the kibbutz, meetings with members, visits to homes, participation in community activities, tours in the area.
Importance: Critical stage - if you do not enjoy the weekend, the kibbutz is probably not suitable for you.
Step 5: Collecting Recommendations
Goal: Verification of the candidates' background.
Number: 2-3 recommendations - from an employer, from an acquaintance from Ma'agan, from friends. The kibbutz personally contacts each recommender.
Duration: Two weeks to a month for collection.
Step 6: Recommendation from the Integration Committee to the General Assembly
After all the steps, the integration committee decides whether to recommend to the assembly to accept the candidates. The recommendation is submitted in writing to the kibbutz members in a special booklet.
Step 7: General Assembly of the Kibbutz - Voting
Once a month or two, a general assembly is held. The candidates are invited to briefly introduce themselves, followed by the vote. A majority of 60-75% is required for acceptance (depending on the regulations). If approved - they sign a membership agreement.
What Happens After Integration?
Trial Period: 1-2 years during which you are full members but not yet fully recognized. It is possible to reach the statutory status of full member after success during this period. This is intended to allow both sides to assess true compatibility.
Tips for Success
- Be honest in interviews - do not try to please
- Present values, not just traits
- Show genuine interest in the community, not just in the property
- Prepare a clear family story about the reason for joining
- Invest in the hosting weekend - it is the most important stage
